This madness is in response to Jeph Jacques challenging all webcartoonists to make a "shitty syndicated version" (i.e., like what you'd find in a newspaper) of our comics, after Tweeting that this here comic is one of the new strips that the syndicates are presenting as the "future of comics."
You can see his example here, and a nice take on Mer Gran's Octopus Pie over here. There will surely be other examples, watch my Twitter, I'll try to RT them.
